I had the wonderful opportunity of having the district’s curriculum specialist as my mentor; in her absence, I hosted a district professional development on Imagine Math. I assisted the presenter with travel to the school and served as her assistant during the training. I also facilitated multiple PLCs with the staff at the Early College. Participating in this task, taught me the importance of networking and stepping out of my comfort zone. I also learned that it is important to be engaging and to value the time of others.
Element IVb. Recruiting, Hiring, Placing and Mentoring of staff: The principal/assistant principal establishes processes and
systems in order to ensure a high-quality, high-performing staff.

As a principal resident, I participated in recruiting at East Carolina University Education Fair, I used this opportunity to build relationships and network. I have also served on the Early College interview committee as we interviewed for a science teacher and school counselor. Attending and participating in recruiting interviewing potential candidates taught me the importance of knowing how to market my school and district. I learned to create an elevator speech about my district.
Element IVc.Teacher and Staff Evaluation: The principal/assistant principal evaluates teachers and other staff in a fair and
equitable manner with the focus on improving performance and, thus, student achievement.

Weekly I completed multiple walkthroughs in classrooms; the district provides an electronic form/survey that is aligned with the district initiatives and non-negotiables. Once submitted, the form is sent to the teacher and it provides immediate feedback. I also completed teacher observations and held post-conferences with teachers. Completing walkthroughs on teachers taught me the importance of providing positive feedback to teachers and documenting. I learned that most teachers want feedback and desire to receive it in a timely manner.
